About
Danny Wils
Painter. Observer. Collector of light.
Biography
I paint cities the way I experience them — not as maps or postcards, but as accumulations of light, colour, and time. My work begins on location, in sketchbooks and quick studies, before moving into the studio where the real conversation starts.
Architecture has always fascinated me: the way a building holds memory, the way afternoon sun turns a plain facade into something almost alive. I'm drawn to the moment just before a scene becomes ordinary — when the light is still doing something unexpected.
I work primarily in mixed media on canvas, building up layers of color and mark-making until the painting finds its own logic. Some pieces resolve quickly; others take months of returning and reworking.
Process
01
Observation
Every painting starts outside — sketching, photographing, absorbing a place until I understand what drew me to it.
02
Studio work
Back in the studio I work from memory and reference, building the composition in layers, letting the painting evolve away from the source.
03
Resolution
A painting is finished when it holds its own — when it no longer needs the place it came from.
Artist Statement
"I'm interested in the gap between a place and our experience of it. Cities are full of that gap — between the building as it is and the building as it feels at a particular hour, in a particular light. My paintings try to live in that gap."
